Lollapalooza 2008-1.JPG

Its that time of year again when I bring you the latest installment of Lollapalooza. Definitely was not the same this time, kind of a bummer actually as the usual cronies who come into town could not make it this year. What, you getting to old Swifty? Oh right, you have family obligations now. Growing up sucks doesn’t it. So not one to miss an opportunity, I decided I would go regardless on the last day of the 3 day festival. I don’t think I could handle much more than that anyway, the physical hangover is just too much.

Maybe its lost its charm, or it could have been because I trekked alone, or I was completely sober, but flying solo sorta sucks its not like going to the movies alone. The show sold out all three days, and much to my disappointment I could not get a one day walk in ticket. So after a long train ride I was just about to turn back and come home. Dammit, the one year I really wanted to see a headliner and I can’t get in. Somehow, as luck would have it, this dude asked me if I had a ticket. I said nope, and he offered to sell me a spare, and as any good oppurtunist he tacked on a premium for himself and wouldn’t budge on the price. “See I can be a dick about it, it is sold out you know.” Fine dammit, so I bought it from him. It was as if we were doing a drug deal on the street, money exchanged hands and I got the ticket. After the guy took off I couldn’t help but wonder if he sold me a fake ticket. It looked nothing like last years, no fancy logo, no nothing, just a plain stub.  Walking all the way to the gate I was looking feverishly for others who had tickets so I could compare them. Nope, everyone had the wristbands. Crap, would I be turned away from the gate and be out a hundred bucks?

After going through ’security’ (laughable actually), the gate person scanned my ticket and..bingo! I was in, whew! The first thing I noticed was it was crowded, really really crowded. Definitely not like the last few times. Traversing anywhere meant merging into the river of traffic. Oy this was going to be a hot one with all these sweaty bodies. But I made it in, groovey.

I texted Brad a few times to see where he was at, naturally the odds of finding a single person in a crowd of 75,000 people are slim. I wandered around to the north end to see if I could find him. No such luck, so instead since I didn’t have lunch I grabbed something to eat. Not bad, and price was reasonable. So after more back and forth texting I wandered around from stage to stage and didn’t hang around long to listen. Although I did catch the tail end of Perry Ferrell and Slash playing the Kidapalooza stage. That was…strange to see these two rock legends playing Jane’s Addiction songs with a bunch of kids.

I wandered over to the Playstation stage and it was between acts so I had a chance to harrass Jen Howard who was working camera for Lolla. I wandered around some more while Iron and Wine was playing the main stage at the north end. Meh, a style of music thats just too mellow for me. I took a seat and waited for Flogging Molly to start, people watching is certainly interesting at these sorts of things. I saw everything from drunken shirtless concert idiots, mohawk punkers, card carrying AARP members to a kid in a stroller with green hair. This place has everything.

Flogging Molly was awesome. From Ireland, this group takes the traditional Irish drinking music and adds some punk rock riffs that creates a distinct sound. Heavy Metal meets the fiddle, accordion and banjo. Aye, the local Irishmen in the crowd were going nuts.

I made the executive decision that I would get dinner and bathroom out of the way afterwards so that I could claim good real estate for Love and Rockets and Nine Inch Nails for the evening. One hamburger and portapotty visit later I was making my way to the main stage. Wouldn’t you know it, there was Brad. So we enjoyed the goth retro stylings of Love and Rockets for a bit. It was like reanimating the dead, who let these guys out of long term storage? It was a good set though, the wall of noise was deafening but familiar. Brad and his posse didn’t want to stick around for NIN, probably a good choice for them, and we exchanged goodbyes.

I claimed my spot on the grass, this was the closest I have ever been for a NIN show and I was not about to give it up. An hour passed, the stage was being loaded and the crowd slowly grew thicker. Eventually it was so crowded I had to stand or risk a boot in my face. The time drew nearer, the anticipation grew. Cheering and chants of “Kanye Sucks!” were heard. Then the trademark smoke, which lead to the prerecorded 999,999 track. The crowd surged forward, I had no choice. We were packed in there like sweaty hogs when Trent Reznor and his crew came out to kick our asses. The crowd went nuts, the lights, the sound were in overdrive. Then, the third song in was March Of The Pigs, a classic from the early nineties. This of course was an invitation for meatheads everywhere to start a mosh pit, and naturally it was right next to me. Oh man, I spent quite a bit of the evening in defensive mode from these morons. Thats all well and good though, it is after all a Nine Inch Nails show.  The lighting for this tour is just incredible. They did some really cool stuff with the video walls, it just gets better everytime. The pictures and video do not do it justice.

After two hours of getting my ears pummeled from songs like Wish, Head Like A Hole, Terrible Lie, Only, Survivalism and so forth it was over. Wow, that went by fast. It was time to go home. Like the sweaty lemmings we were, the crowd spilled out of Grant Park into the streets. I had 30 minutes to make the train or have to stay a lot later than I wanted to for the next one. Once again, I ran my ass off to get to the station. Let me tell you, running downtown after spending all day in the sun on your feet is not fun. I passed many others trying to do the same in flip flops. I did make it though, 8 minutes to spare.

I’m getting past my prime for this kind of stuff though. We’ll see about next year.

So its the day after, my legs are sore, I’m tired, and my ears are ringing. This can only mean my return to Lalapalooza. Like last time, although nothing could ever top that one, it was a ton of fun. As usual Swifty came in as well as Scotty’s bro James. One thing is for sure, this time it was sweltering hot, finding shade was at a premium so we were chugging the water (with an occasional fermented brew mixed in).

I had some reservations about going in the first place because I felt the lineup was rather weak. There weren’t too many names on the list that I recognized or had a desire to see. This year, the bill featured a diverse range of music from the usual rock fare, shoegaze, punk, blues and surprisingly electronic music. The short list of the acts we caught:

* Ted Leo and the Pharmacists
* Charlie Musselwhite
* The Polyphonic Spree
* Against Me!
* Silversun Pickups
* The Black Keys
* LCD Soundsystem
* Daft Punk
lollapalooza-day1-2007-003.jpg

The acts that I thought were stand outs were Charlie Musselwhite (Blues), Against Me! (Punk), Silversun Piackups (Shoegaze), LCD Soundsystem (Pop electronica?), and Daft Punk (Electronica). Daft Punk I have to say was fantastic! You know the genre of dance electronica has come a long way when two guys dressed as robots spinning turntables is headlining a rock festival. The whole place turned into a giant rave, it was euphoric. Everyone was groovin, I mean everyone which was really cool.

After the show, despite my legs were going to fall off I ended up running back to the train station to make the 10:40. Whew! Made it with one minute to spare!

So this is only Day 1, I plan on returning for Day 3!
Uh..scratch that idea. My damn knee is really sore today so the idea of standing around all day, walking and then running to the train again doesn’t work for me.

If the soreness in my neck is any indication, 2 days later, it must have been a good show. This time I dragged Trisha out to the summer tour of Nine Inch Nails. Watch out people, your elders are at the show, we’re here to relive our youth. Damn you kids and your leather bras and nose rings, why don’t you go home and sulk in some dark corner of your parents house in Naperville? What? Yes I saw them in February but decided one more time because I was disappointed with the seating arrangements. On the way there (coming all the way from Durand) we got a flat tire. For sure I thought we were gonna get screwed somehow yet again. OK, spare tire installed, we made it with time to spare. Parking no problem, getting tickets from will call, no problem. Try to bring in my camera, problem. Dammit. OK so back to the car, then back in. Finally.It pays to become a fan club member, as the choice of seating is awesome. We were about 28 rows back in the front section, so the sight lines were perfect. I had some fears about sound issues initially because the show was at the notoriously bad First Midwest Bank Ampitheatre (Formerly known as The World, then Tweeter Center). I have to say the sound crew was able to salvage it and NIN gave us a kick ass show. I thought Bauhaus was pretty cool too, kind of a throwback to the early 80’s. Oh wait a sec, they are from that era. I don’t know much about them, except they are the ones who started the Goth movement. Trent says they are the ones who inspired him to get into music. I find it funny that he likes to tour with his former idols, who have been completely eclipsed by him in terms of popularity (Bowie comes to mind).So without further ado, the evening’s setlist:

    Somewhat Damaged
    You Know What You Are?
    Sin
    Terrible Lie
    March Of The Pigs
    Something I Can Never Have
    Closer
    Burn
    Gave Up
    Help Me I Am In Hell
    Even Deeper
    Only
    Wish
    La Mer
    Into The Void
    The Big Come Down
    Suck
    Down In It
    Hurt
    Final Solution w/Peter Murphy
    The Hand That Feeds
    Head Like a Hole

For you hardcore fans out there you will notice the strong presence of tracks from their early works, which will lead me to jump around like an idiot with glee. The lights and stage setup were dazzling as usual, especially that cage thingy that lowered. Oh yeah, you know this is a NIN show when the two dudes a few rows in front of you need to get a room. Once again I leave it to internets to provide the pictures. Especially this link on flickr.com .

Check out this clip from youtube.com, probably the best part of the show when the cage is used. The instrumental Help Me I Am In Hell followed by Even Deeper. Ignore the drunks.

Its spring time again, that can only mean one thing. Time for the annual Swifty migration to Chicago, but don’t blink as he will vanish before you know it. This time he was in town for the Pearl Jam show at the United Center. Since it was a Wednesday night I took 2 days off work so I could recover, good forsight as I’m writing this on four hours of sleep. Man, I did way too much driving last night..or today…or whatever! What day is this again?

Anyways, back to the show…yeah they rocked the house! I saw them once a long time ago at Purdue back in their heyday and compared to last nights they still got it. One of the few bands to survive the Seattle explosion from the early Nineties, they have matured since and some of their later albums aren’t up to snuff, but this latest installment is pretty damn good. They played for what seemed like forever, including two encores that were great with a mix of old and new material. I got into the older stuff a bit more than the lamos around us, I must be showing my age. I took a ton of pictures with my trusty camera, and sadly a lot of them didn’t turn out. But there were some good ones in there, check em out in the gallery. I also have some videos here. Thanks to Youtube!

Here is last night’s setlist:

Set 1 Severed Hand, World Wide Suicide, Life Wasted, Animal, Marker In The Sand, Do The Evolution, Whipping, 1/2 Full, I Am Mine, Even Flow, Gone, Insignificance, Better Man, Save it for Later, Down, Garden, Inside Job, Lukin, Why Go
Encore 1 Wasted Reprise, Man Of The Hour, Footsteps, Once, Alive
Encore 2 Last Kiss, Last Exit, Glorified G, Elderly Woman Behind The Counter In A Small Town, Crown Of Thorns, Rockin’ In The Free World, Yellow Ledbetter

And with that, I threw Swifty into the car (sometimes brute force is necessary with him ;) ), drove him to the airport at 4:30 this morning and away he went. See you next spring Jungleboy.

Yeah I’m probably just a huge geek, but I came across a neato community web site called Last.Fm . This whole “Web 2.0” thing is really starting to explode with all these neat sites like Flickr.com, Digg.com, and all these other trendy community driven web sites. Last.Fm is a music geeks paradise! It tracks what you listen too, and then suggests other similar music to what you are currently listening too. Or you can listen to samples of other peoples playlists and a bunch more stuff I haven’t even gotten into yet. You’ll notice a new widget on the menu bar displaying what I last listened too. Currently I am exploring some of the more obscure stuff I missed from back in the day (I like to call it “Jeff Music” -hey thats a compliment Hodge!) with bands like Sonic Youth, My Bloody Valentine and so forth, heck I even heard a new subgenre name for this style of rock “shoegaze“? Well, so far me likes it. Yes I am a little late to the party thank you very much!

winter2006-north

After almost 10 years since I last saw them, finally was able to catch Nine Inch Nails in concert again. My ears are still ringing..what?
It was an interesting evening as this was not the usual venue to go see a major rock act. Since I was not able to go see them the two times they played Chicago last year I had to resort to seeing them play in the Quad Cities on a Sunday night. Dave, my fellow concert junkie and I made the trek out to “The Mark“. It was easy enough to find, it sits right on the mighty Mississippi River. That part of town is fairly odd, a mix of old and new and there was no place to get a quick bite anywhere. So concession stand dinner it was! Mmmmmmm healthy.
So after downing our gourmet meals we went to our section. CURSES! I was really disappointed in our seats, instead of being off to the side yet still in front of the stage, we were exactly to the side, almost looking from the rear and this was not a concert in the round. We tried to get moved but no dice, I suppose we could have snuck off to somewhere else but alas we did not. Our mistake, as the opening band Moving Units (who?), came on the side fresnel light (a very bright spot light) shone right into our eyes! We were blind, and had to leave. Bah…
After they were finished we ventured back and awaited the mighty Trent Reznor and company to come out and kick our arses. They did not disappoint. Mayhem, anger, angst and sadness were the themes tonight. Great show with a mix of both old and new music and even from our crappy vantage point it was an excellent light show. Trent as usual delivered an amazingly intense concert, and during the finale the guitarist decided to take a flying leap off the stage right into the pit. I only wish we could have seen it from the front end. We also couldn’t see the film that plays during the instrumental Eraser, one of my favorites. We don’t have a camera currently so I borrowed some photos taken by others from the same show. The internet is a wonderful thing isn’t it?

Lollapalooza2005

Whoa…what a hangover today. I better write this down before I forget what I experienced. Well, my first ever Lollapalooza was one hell of a ride thanks to Swifty and his connections on the inside. Lucky for us he knows someone who knows someone who knows someone else in Billy Idols band who got us on the guest list. I was skeptical that it would work (which has happened before) and that we would would have to buy tickets instead which was fine with me. Or if it did work out we would have at least a free ticket. Well, I was wrong on both counts! BOOOYAAAAA Backstage passes were handed to us. There is no better way to experience a music festival like this, I’ve been spoiled. Better views, no huge crowds, free food and booze, and best of all, hang out with rock stars. YEAAAAAAAHHHH!Needless to say, we were jazzed (Swifty especially being the music nut he is.). So here’s the recap of what we did:
We arrived at around 2:30, the show actually opened at 11 am but we didn’t care much about the first couple of bands. We walked over to see the Kaiser Chiefs who were in full swing. Great set and I like their style of music. The best was the finale when they had two people from the crowd sing the whole song of “Oh My God”. They were pretty good too!Then we wandered over to one of Eriks favs, The Brian Jonestown Massacre. The lead singer kept yelling at the other stage where Dashboard Confessional was playing. “Don’t quit your dayjobs!” He seemed like he was in a bad mood, but I think thats how he is all the time from what I understand. So after this set we decided to use the power of our passes and find a nicer bathroom and score some free food and drink.Erik wanted to go talk to the guys from Brian Jonestown sitting there behind the stage but I advised him not too. He looked like he didn’t want to be bothered. So we moved on, walking past Perry Farrell, the guy who founded this whole thing years ago, in the process. Cool! Janes Addiction was my first ever CD that I bought. We tried getting into the VIP area, but were kicked out as we didn’t have the proper credentials, high rollers only I guess. Oh, we will have our revenge later.

Somehow we found our way onto backstage where Cake was playing. We inched our way closer and helped ourselves to some beer. Cake was playing awesome, and we had some great views of the band and the crowd from our vantage point. As a bonus, who should walk up and stand next to us was none other than Mr. Les Claypool. Hell yeah, the Primus frontman and bass master himself. At first I wasn’t sure as he has a huge beard now, but my hunches were confirmed later.

A couple more beers later, it was time to pay homage to our host, Billy Idol. The security staff at that stage were complete dicks, and would not let us on any part of the sidestage, or in front either. Erik managed to sneak past them and snapped a few great shots of Billy right up front. We were kicked out and forced onto the main field with the ‘commoners’. Hey, we were royalty there right? It started to rain a bit, but it soon subsided. Billy was friggin great, performing all his big hits and he rocked the crowd. Oh yeah, we also started talking with the bass player Collin from Brian Jonestown Massacre and his woman. Erik talked his ear off and I just told him “Great f’ing set”. We were then invited to come to the afterparty at the Double Door. Sweet!

So, next up was the band I wanted to see most, Primus. We ran up to the viewing platform with no problems and looked down from above. Les was in great form as he rocked the crowd standing in front of two huge inflatable ducks. His setlist included some of my favorites like Jerry Was A Racecar Driver and Here Come The Bastards. Everyone went nuts and huge mosh pit formed in front of the stage. I shot some video using my camera and took plenty of photos. Afterwards, we came down and Les was talking to a few folks. Hey what the hell lets go say hi! So we did. I shook his hand told him I loved his music and Erik posed with him for a photo op. Cool guy. Of course I had to razz Zeisler a bit afterwards :P

So then we headed back over to the same stage with the prick security guards to catch another favorite of mine, The Pixies. They recently came back together again after a being on hiatus for a few years. Damn, they sounded good. Erik and I pounded some more beers during this show and man I was starting to swim.

Since we were standing next to the VIP section again, and only a weak hedgerow seperated us from them, Erik pushed his way through to get himself a T-Shirt. Afterwards I too went to get mine. Two of his buddies from back east were also at the show, and this was where they were at so since it was getting dark we mingled with the crowd so security couldn’t see that we weren’t supposed to be in there. As we watched the final act, Weezer, we pounded more beers. I was pretty much in the tank at this point.

So the show ended and we made our way to Michigan Avenue to grab a cab and go to the Double Door. Apparently we had some new found friends who also tagged along, thats fine because they paid for the cab fare :) . I was done drinking for the evening, somehow I had to make it home. So we hung out with some industry types and there was this band playing that was kickass. Which I just figured out was somebody called Ben Kweller. So, midnight came and I had to return my glass slippers. Hopped a cab and made the last train out of Chicago.
