Running update

September 22, 2006 - 9:51 pm No Comments

I’ve decided to get back on the horse and start posting my miles on here again. How else can I remain accountable, right? :)

So on Thursday, I dropped Erik off for preschool. It’s a 2.5 hour program. The preschool’s conveniently located right next to the Great Western Trail (where I ran the Great Western Half Marathon in the spring). Well, lemme tell ya, I did 6 miles and I cannot see how I ever ran 13. It’s been so long since I’ve done longer distances that I feel like a slug. Granted, I felt GREAT afterwards. I am not even too horribly sore today from it. Just a little in the legs, of course. It was a nice run. It was a gorgeous day, and I can’t wait to do it again.

There was just one thing missing. I sure could use a furry running companion (hint, hint…)

One week to go

April 29, 2006 - 6:06 am No Comments

Well this week before half marathon week has been, ummm, busy. I managed two two-milers and hope to run 8 this weekend along with another shortie of around four or five. Nothing huge. I’m breaking in new shoes, too, which is kind of late in the game but they’re the same exact shoe so hopefully about 30 miles of warmup miles will be enough for these shoes to carry me through to the finish line on May 7.

I’ll be traveling on Monday through Wednesday of race week. This is perfect, because in past years I have brought my shoes and gone for short early morning runs on the Stanford campus before my meeting. It is such a beautiful campus to run on. I’m looking forward to it.

Bunions? We don’t need no stinkin bunions!

Well well well…looks like I’m turning into an old man quicker than I thought. If you follow along on the rlog page (And I know you do! exciting stuff!), the last couple of weeks I developed a pain in my foot. Akin to somebody hitting my toes with a hammer when my foot would strike the ground. At first thought, after some research I thought I had something called Mortons Neuroma. So I went and saw my regular doctor who tended to agree with me and sent me to an orthopedic doctor to confirm.

Well, a few x-rays later we saw something else instead, I have a friggin bunion! I thought only old ladies got this problem, but noooooooo! Thanks to crappy running shoes and poor genes, I have one also.
Wikipedia defines a Bunion as such:

In medicine, a bunion is a painful deformity of the bones and the joint between the foot and the big toe (the metatarsophalangeal (MTP) joint). Bunions develop via long-term irritation (inflammation) from arthritis, poorly-fitting shoes, and heredity, any of which can cause this joint at the base of the big toe to thicken and enlarge. Those with flat feet and low arches are prone to developing bunions, as well as those in professions which place excessive stress on the feet, such as ballet dancers.

Ding Ding! Thats me, Mr Flat Foot.

So, since my bunion is now a permanent feature of my foot (unless I have someone cut it off), I now have to wear special inserts in my running shoes. Oh joy. Well, so far it feels strange wearing them, but I will get used to it.
